POWER7 in the smaller cheaper rack mount options have been announced making the new POWER7 chipset available to the SME market as of Sept. I'm looking forward to doing some costing against x86 solutions in this zone, the prices look competitive, especially if you take OS and virtualisation software into account.

For the 2U 710/730 systems
- The 710/730 is sold under the same IBM part number but comes with a different motherboard. Important to note that you cannot upgrade these systems to a different CPU configuration.
- The two socket 730 requires both sockets to be populated
- No split backplane option is available for the 710/730
- No expansion drawers available for the 710/30
- can be a competitive to blades solutions where the blade count per bladecentre is low
The for the 4U 720/740
- You can have 4 full height PCIe and 4 half height PCIe internal to the 720/740 by using a GX slot and a special expansion adapter
- twice the memory per core compared with the 710/730
- the dual socket 740 can be run with a single socket populated
- the 720/740 have a split backplane option
