If you are up to date with your VMware versions and you are using the latest in backup software (Netbackup 7, TSM6 veeam, vRanger etc) you will enjoying the pleasure of vmdk image backups without client software in each VM.

There are some good reasons for wanting to do VMware image backups:

  • Recover a complete machine with its data, no need to install OS as first part of a DR plan
  • No need for backup agents on each OS image, reducing admin and version control
  • More opportunity for DR testing
For some however there may be some barriers for upgrading to the latest version of the backup software or VMware.
  • Cost of upgrade
  • Complexity of existing estate
  • Controlled by a different department
Pancetera unite have a great product to solve this issue. It is supplied as a VM appliance (download the vmdk) and presents your datastore as a CIFS or NFS share. You can see the VMDK's and back them up, or browse down to file level. Point your existing backup product at the CIFS/NFS and hey presto, a vStorage API enabled backup environment up and running in no time. The product also has some smart technology in it for reducting blocks read, so you are reducing the burden on you VMware infrastructure during that ever shrinking backup window. Opens up possibilities to drag and drop VMDK's about your estate with minimal effort and reduced network bandwidth. take a look, download the 30 day trial and give us a shout if you want a price or guided demo.
